Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)

What is Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)?

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) is a therapeutic approach that helps individuals explore and process their emotions in order to foster healing and personal growth. EFT is based on the idea that emotions are central to human experience, and that understanding and working through emotions can lead to greater psychological well-being.

How Does Emotion-Focused Therapy Work?

In EFT, the therapist helps individuals identify, express, and regulate their emotions. The goal is to create a safe space for clients to explore difficult emotions, such as anger, fear, or sadness, and to develop healthier ways to process and respond to these feelings. The therapy often involves focusing on specific emotional experiences to help individuals understand and transform their emotional responses.

Benefits of Emotion-Focused Therapy

EFT can be beneficial for individuals dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma, and relationship issues. Some of the key benefits include:

  • Improved emotional regulation and awareness.
  • Greater self-compassion and understanding of emotional needs.
  • Enhanced relationships and communication skills.
  • Reduction in symptoms of anxiety and depression.

What to Expect in EFT Sessions

EFT sessions typically involve exploring specific emotional experiences in depth. The therapist will guide individuals through identifying and expressing emotions, helping them to make sense of their emotional responses and develop healthier ways of coping with emotional challenges.

Is Emotion-Focused Therapy Right for You?

If you struggle with processing emotions or feel overwhelmed by emotional experiences, EFT may be a helpful approach. Speaking with a therapist trained in EFT can help determine if this method is the right fit for your emotional and psychological needs.

Integrative Psychotherapist

I’m an accredited psychotherapist with 15 years experience.I believe that the counselling relationship should be a creative space for both parties. It should feel comfortable and open enough to be free from anxiety and pressure in which new perspectives can emerge. In my view most mental activity takes place below the level of conscious awareness and my role is to help people gain access to it and insights from it.As an accredited therapist I am affiliated with several private healthcare companies including BUPA and AXA. I have an up-to-date DBS certificate which is registered on the update service. As well as working with individual adults, including trainee therapists, I have many years' experience working with children, couples and families. I have been a university counsellor so have a lot of experience working with students and young people and have also worked in secondary schools.
